Seriously, it’s not like it’s truly about ‘heritage’. Just slap a Toyota badge on it and call it a Supra.

But then BMW wouldn’t have paid half of the development cost

Isn’t there already some precedent for this with the 90's SC300/400 sharing a chassis and engine with the Supra?  This would just be sharing the other direction.

Not if we called it a Supra, then all these fanbois would be in them and 2JZ swappin'

And here’s another hot take - the RCF isn’t very good.  It’s outclassed by each of its competitors.  The only benefit it really offers is Toyota reliability.  I’m glad the Supra is not this.

Maybe with some of the money spent on developing the Supra they could made the RC competitive.

Badge engineering down market like that would be disastrous for the Lexus brand. It could work if they ended the RC (no big sales loss there), reinvented the car as a Supra, and reengineer ed enough of it so all the car journos would not  write how it was just a rebadge of a failed Lexus.

I can’t imagine a stock factory Toyota Supra with a NA V8. It has to have a straight six trubo or at least a v6 Turbo IMO. Do you think people will accept it without that engine “heritage”?

Same was said about the M3 and people seem to love their E9X cars.

Having a top trim gt86 with a new engine, completely new, high-quality interior and some exterior treatments would actually make for a pretty cool Supra

Not the worst idea. It’s not like past Supras were exactly slim and nimble.

Possibly, but then it wouldn’t have been a good Lexus.  The RCF is a great Lexus, but just not competitive to its peers.

So even a great Lexus can't be  competitive ?

The issue is the RC chassis is an amalgam of the current GS front end, last-gen IS-C center section, and current IS rear end. They had planned on making the RC into a drop-top, hence the old IS-C center section with its added strengthening structure. But the dealerships demanded Lexus make a 7-passenger RX over another low-volume convertible. So the ditched plans for the RC-C, and they made the RXL instead.

So while the RC is extremely rigid, it is also entirely too heavy for a performance car. As a stylish daily, it works superbly. But push it at all, and it just cannot handle its mass.

The new Supra/BMW Z# will have a far more dedicated chassis under it, and I expect it will drive light years better than the RC does when pushed hard.

Rumor is they are going to refresh the RC soon, which will include significant weight loss. So since they have scrapped plans for that convertible RC, maybe they can take out all that added structure without hurting the feel of the car too much. I’d love to drive an RC that weighs 300+ pounds less.

In that arena, yes.  Lexus makes great cars, I owned an IS for a couple years and it was quiet, comfortable and reliable.  It wasn’t fun.  If they made it competitive with the M3, C63 and RS5, I think they realize Lexus buyers wouldn’t buy it.  Toyota is more than capable, but I think they have a good handle on their demographic and just seem afraid to step out of it.

Basically the same width and 6 inches longer but, that's all in the wheelbase.

perhaps it looks a bit too bloated (LOL the original one was bloated too) But I welcome the fact that they designed a new car rather than badge engineering. (even if it will culminate with badge engineere d BMW twin)

The RCF is over a foot longer than the new Supra and weighs an additional 600lbs. Granted it does have significantly more power than the Supra is expected to, but it’s also sporting a V8. And the it’s  based on a platform pieced together from other luxury sedans. Sure that will make a nice car to drive around town and be able to hammer on the throttle with, but that’s not the recipe for a great sports car.

Its only 7 inches longer and like I said before, it’s all in the wheelbase. It does weigh a bunch more and the chassis might not be the most sport oriented but, it’s not like the Supra was  the best handling nimble thing either

Here’s how I think about it: The Supra is to what the BMW badge-engineered clone will be , as the 86 is to the BRZ.

Toyota makes the platform and fiddles with it, with input from the other company, to ensure both come away satisfied.

The other company makes the powerplant, and Toyota gets to fiddle with it in order to make themselves happy with what they get.

Toyota supplies the drivetrain components wherever possible, and sells their car as the “cheap” version while the other company gets to walk away with the bigger profit margin.

You’re off on your measurements for both still, based on what’s been reported, but I don’t think it’ll change your opinion anyway so nbd.

2019 Supra reported dimensions:

Wheelbase: 97.2 inches

Length: 172.4 inches

2019 Lexus RC F dimensions:

Wheelbase: 107.5 inches

Length: 185.2 inches

So wheelbase is 10.3" less and overall length is 12.8" less

I was talking about the old Supra compared to th e RC , doesn’t really matter though. I'd rather have the BMW twin that comes out of this anyway
